British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, located using surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several access tunnels down to the depot... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of thousands of UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, following an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
