Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any prominent honors show approaches, you'll find a demand to include of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
