We present a dare for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it could look like conventional biological terror, but within Together exists a deep examination about our choices in loving each other.
A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics
Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.
The narrative begins when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.
The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.
Complex Characterizations
A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.
The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.
Both characters confront the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.
Thematic Depth
While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.
A Controversial Conclusion
Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.
Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
