The Substance Film
The filmmaker's bold critique tackles the demanding standards for women's appearance and the feared consequences of advancing years. Demi Moore offers a masterful portrayal as Elisabeth, a 50-year-old celebrity reduced to hosting a fitness program on the small screen. Edged out by her slimy boss Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she undergoes a secretive and horrifying procedure called the Substance. This produces a new version of herself named Sue, resulting in a progressively parasitic dynamic between them. This Friday, the streaming service Paramount+
The Woman in Cabin 10 Film
This Agatha Christie-esque mystery includes the talented actress playing Laura, a top-notch writer who takes a hiatus from reporting on world issues to join a high-end voyage alongside an ailing Norwegian shipping heiress and philanthropist, her partner, and other filthy rich individuals. Yet once an unknown lady disappears from the ship overnight and everyone insists she wasn't real, the reporter's sleuthing skills kick in. Out now, on Netflix
Presence
The acclaimed director challenges his directorial skills in this clever paranormal narrative filmed completely from the perspective of a ghost. When a household including mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe moves into their new suburban house, the filming device – as the unseen entity – follows them around. The teen shows signs of sensing the supernatural presence, and it looks like protective of her. Yet what is the reason? This is an entertaining concept that avoids overstaying, featuring a surprise you might not see coming. October 11th, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
Cage embraces his unique fame in this meta comedy caper. He portrays a narcissistic Hollywood actor named Nicolas Cage who accepts a lucrative offer to visit a celebration on the Spanish island for the wealthy Javi Gutierrez. Contacted by government spies to spy on the suspected cartel boss, Cage's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” comes in handy. Saturday 11 October, prime time, the Channel 4 network
The Black Phone Horror
The director's locked-room horror holds up well despite the lack of a follow-up. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, multiple kidnappings has made the youth on edge. After Finney gets captured by the villain and imprisoned in a cellar, he anticipates the worst. However, the disconnected phone on the wall continues to ring, with eerie communicators giving advice, and the prescient dreams of Gwen, his sister might rescue him. A solid creepfest. This Saturday, late evening, the Film4 channel
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the conflict between faith and wealth, the winner is obvious for greed in Showalter's wonderfully garish film adaptation of the disgraced TV preacher and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield acts as the corrupt Bakker, who states at the beginning, claiming divine approval for wealth. He and Tammy Faye set about profiting from the American public's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of bad interior design, overdone appearance and bad faith, yet Jessica Chastain manages to present the character with compassion. Tuesday 14 October, late night, Film4
This Espionage Thriller
This week's another release from Steven Soderbergh delivers a espionage tale as sharp like the turtlenecks sported by Fassbender's intelligence officer. He receives a mission to identify a mole inside the organization from five suspects – one of whom is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Each performer are masters of understated style, leading to a delightful mind game of deception or honesty takes place. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela participate the clever spy entertainment. Friday 17 October, multiple time slots, Sky Cinema Premiere
